Prevention

Delta Children’s Advocacy Center provides a Community Educator who can make presentations about child maltreatment to local civic groups, churches, and professional associations. The Community Educator can also provide Mandated Reporter training to social workers, teachers, daycare workers, nurses, physicians, law enforcement officials, attorneys, first responders, and others who are required to report suspected child abuse and neglect in good faith. A primary focus of the Community Educator is taking Child Abuse Prevention programs into local schools to inform children about child abuse, how to prevent it, and what to do when it happens.

Training

Through its founding partnership with the the Delta State University Department of Social Work and Child Advocacy Studies and the DSU Division of Graduate and Continuing Studies, the Delta Children’s Advocacy collaborates on the provision of quality continuing education and training for inter-disciplinary professionals who give trauma-informed care to children and families experiencing child maltreatment. Delta Children’s Advocacy Center also serves as an interactive learning laboratory for university students in Child Advocacy Studies Training (CAST) Programs by providing supervised volunteer placements and internships.

Awareness

The Mississippi Delta is known as one of the poorest regions in the United States, making its citizens vulnerable to common correlates of poverty such as crime, mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, and child maltreatment.

We exist to shine a light on this issue and, most importantly, do something about it. Knowing the extent of the problem helps expand empathy and advocacy for children who could be at risk or in need.
